Stereophonics :: Place Stadium :: Sat. Feb. 20

February 11, 2010

Stereophonics are huge in Europe. And justly so. These guys have headlined countless festivals, deliver an amazing live show, and are no strangers to the top of the charts. What's more, they make alternative rock music that's actually bearable to listen to. They're quality in the mainstream, a rarity nowadays. -D.P. Place Stadium, 777 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver, BC, Canada Tickets can be found by calling 1-800-tickets

Armin Van Buuren :: Garfinkels :: Mon. Feb. 22

February 08, 2010

Devastating Dutch DJ, Armin Van Buuren, has topped just about every DJ ranking on the planet, so it should be no surprise that he's favoured to blow the roof off of the Olympics on several different nights during Vancouver 2010. Garfinkels is the priveledged establishment on this evening and a record breaking by Armin Van Burren is certainly not out of the question. Tickets are $65 @ Club Zone #1-4308 Main Street, Whistler (Whislter Village) BC

Paul Oakenfold :: Garfinkels :: Wed. Feb. 17

February 08, 2010

Merle Haggard :: Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre :: Sat. Mar. 13

Ah casinos, where popstars go to die. But wait...isn't Merle Haggard dead already? Oh no wait, I'm thinking of his entire audience...or both. -D.P. Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre, 2080 United Boulevard, Coquitlam, BC V3K 6W3, Canada Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Benny Benassi :: Gossip :: Thur. Feb. 18

February 05, 2010

Gossip Nighclub has completely solidified itself as the throw down dance off extravaganza spot of Vancouver 2010. It would be hard pressed to find a lineup in Canadian club history to match the two week turntable massacre that Gossip has is in store for the world. Gossip has clearly put a gold medal in partying at their forefront and if you've ever wanted to write off 14 days with furious non-stop celebration, this is what you've been training for. The Olympic sized prices will be well worth getting down with the world's most dedicated partiers. Rated as one of the top 15 DJs in the world Benny Benassi brings his Italian crates to the crowd on Thursday night. Tickets are $85 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

The Big Pink w/ A Place to Bury Strangers :: Venue :: Sat. Mar. 13

December 30, 2009

Screw The Big Pink. The bill should be listed the other way around. You're not seeing the Big Pink, don't even try to. But! you will go see A Place to Bury Strangers. And then, once your eardrums have been blown out, you're going to go home and thank God that such a noise band still exists. -D.P. Venue, 881 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K7 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Hedley :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 11, 2010

You know what the lead singer of Hedley is famous for? Taking off his shirt in public and acting like a downright imbecile in front of millions. His so-called "eccentric" behavior has drawn both the lens of the paparazzi and the starry eyes of little girls into his pathetic sphere of forced insanity and obvious insecurity. But hey, to be fair, Jacob Hoggard has quite a bit to be insecure about; his band is leading the way for mediocrity, and his skills as a vocalist are as nonexistent as a half-intelligent human being at one of his shows. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4, Canada Tickets can be found @ Vancouver 2010

Samantha Ronson :: Gossip :: Wed. Feb. 24

In what will likely be the low point of the fabulous fortnight, Samantha Ronson spins; hopefully without Lindsay Lohan. Tickets are $25 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

Markus Schulz :: Red Room :: Sat. Feb. 27

February 08, 2010

Amidst his immensely successful Global DJ podcast series, Markus Schulz guarantees that Germany will be well represented in the medal count and in the DJ booth. Red Room made no mistake in hand picking one of the world's hottest live DJs and Markus Schulz will no doubt leave the fans with everlasting memories of Vancouver 2010 on the final Saturday of the festivities. Tickets are $30-$40 @ Club Zone 398 Richards Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Calvin Harris :: Celebrities Nightclub :: Fri. Feb. 26

February 04, 2010

While the athletes will be battling it out on ice, sleet and snow at Vancouver 2010, Celebrities Nightclub and Gossip Nightclub appear to be holding their own competition of sorts. Calvin Harris, is on the short list of world renowned disc spinners that have merited themselves invitations to play at, what are looking like, the cool party places of the games. While Benni Bennassi, Armin Van Buuren and MSTRKRFT have all booked slots earlier in the event, it could well be Calvin Harris that runs away with the gold. The King of Electropop is still riding the success of '09's Ready for the Weekend and he appears to be building a steady stream of momentum. Calvin Harris has proven that, like any fine athlete, he relishes on the big stage and what stage could be bigger than one of the host Olympic cities' craziest clubs. Tickets are $55 @ Club Zone 1022 Davie Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Constantines :: Ontario Pavilion :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 11, 2010

Constantines have come a long way since they first started; they've been on the touring circuit with indie's bigger players, have signed to the ever-so-popular Arts & Crafts label, and have been critically acclaimed for their last album Kensington Heights. It's taken 11 years, but these guys are finally getting somewhere, and while the Ontario Pavilion might not do them justice, it's still nice for the Guelph kids' indie rock sound to get some more exposure. And plus, it's free. -D.P. Ontario Pavilion, 1455 Quebec St., Vancouver, BC V6A 3Z7

Armin Van Buuren :: Gossip :: Sat. Feb. 20, 21, 23

February 03, 2010

Vancouverites are already drooling at the thought of having trance legend Armin Van Burren groove in the scene of Vancouver 2010. This would appear to be the perfect set up for a spectacular set: Vancouver 2010, Saturday night, Gossip Nightclub. The second Saturday of the Vancouver 2010 will most certainly be a smooth downhill cruise for all those in attendance. It would definitely be tough to picture a smoother ride than to inspire your body at an Olympic event during the day or evening and then your mind at an Armin Van Burren throw down. This has all the makings of the gold medal party of Vancouver 2010. Tickets are $75-$125 @ Show Time 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver, BC

Marianas Trench :: David Lam Park :: Thu. Feb. 18

February 11, 2010

Marianas Trench is actually the world's deepest known point. It's a very interesting thing to think about, almost beautiful when you come to think of it; the fact that this huge chasm has a name like that. And then these guys come along and steal the name and give it the negative connotation of their bland joke of punk rock and personalities that are as hollow as the chasm from which they made their name. -D.P. David Lam Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada‎

Steve Angello :: Gossip :: Fri. Feb. 19

Sweden won't just be represented on the slopes and ice at Vancouver 2010, house producing Swedish House Mafia member, Steve Angello will throw down at a guaranteed sold out show. Tickets are $65 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

The Low Anthem :: St. James Hall :: Tuesday, Mar. 30

February 03, 2010

We have our Jack Johnsons, our Shins, and sir José González, but rarely do new bands make an appearance into the nature of slow folk music. Thankfully, there's The Low Anthem. While some of their songs are almost too slow for my taste, some of their singles such as To Ohio mix beautiful melodies with simplistic yet deep lyrics. -NB The Low Anthem St. James Hall 3214 West 10th Avenue Vancouver, BC V6K 2L2 604-739-9373 Tickets to The Low Anthem at St James Hall Tickets $25-$33

Crystal Castles :: Gossip :: Sat. Feb. 27

Though known for their more mellow melodic rhythms, Toronto's Crystal Castles are legendary for putting on chaotic performances. Crystal Castles are given the torch for the final lap of the fortnight. Tickets are $40 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

The Morning Benders :: The Media Club :: Sat. Apr. 3

December 29, 2009

Well it sounds like The Morning Benders might just make something out of themselves. Beyond the quality of their songs, the Berkeley quartet has the approval of iTunes editors, not to mention Yo La Tengo, Yeasayer, Death Cab for Cutie, We Are Scientists, and Grizzly Bear. Wait...did I say they might make it? -D.P. The Media Club, 695 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 2P1 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Final Fantasy :: Vogue Theatre :: Sun. May 9

January 28, 2010

He's non-stop, isn't it? And isn't his actual stage name Owen Pallett. You know what he is, and there's nothing I can say to make you go or not go if you've made up your mind. (Go). -D.P. Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L2‎

YACHT :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Fri. Feb. 19

December 21, 2009

Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway Vancouver, BC V5T 3J7 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Serena Maneesh :: Media Club :: Saturday, March. 27

February 01, 2010

Take Metric, add talent, and you have Serena Maneesh. This Norwegian bombshell group won’t be an up-and-coming for much longer…they’re pretty much there. Go see them while their concert tickets are still only $14, before their scandals are being overshadowed by their musical talent, and before they’re the guest on Live @ Much and for some reason seem lame after. Serena Maneesh Media Club 695 Cambie Street Vancouver, BC V6B 2P1 (604) 608-2871 Tickets for Serena-Maneesh Tickets $14

Jason Collett :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Fri. Mar. 26

February 17, 2010

Formerly a member of Toronto supergroup Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett has decided, for quite some time now, to pursue his solo career. And it's paid off. Out of all the solo BSS projects, his is definitely one of the few to really take off. His hybrid alt-country/country-indie sound has gotten him signed to the prestigious Arts & Crafts label, and has taken him around the world. While some may find his music too rustic or whiskey-ish (a good way to describe it), he has a legion of fans, and now, at the Biltmore Cabaret, it's your chance to find out if you're enlisting. -D.P. Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC V5T 3J7 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

April Wine :: Commodore Ballroom :: Sat. Apr. 24

January 29, 2010

Classic Rock band April Wine seem to be showing no signs of showing down. For those of you born after 1989 and don't know who these guys are, just ask your dad. He'll roll his eyes at you, but eventually, he'll answer. It's not that April Wine's not an appealing band to the younger generation, it's that the younger generation is too caught up with stupid techno/indie/new age garbage. Create a parent-child bonding time around bands like April Wine. -NB April Wine Commodore Ballroom 868 Granville Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3 (604) 739-4550 Tickets $32.50-$100 Tickets to April Wine at Commodore Ballroom

And you know what? After a constant stream of solid releases (ok, fine, maybe except that messed up Effects of 333 last year) we can't wait. -D.P. Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3, Canada Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Arkells :: Ontario Pavilion :: Wed. Feb. 17

February 11, 2010

You know when you feel guilty listening to a band? No, no, I'm not talking about a guilty pleasure. I'm talking about listening to something that actually makes you feel guilty because you're afraid that it's going to have a negative effect on your eardrums; that it will allow yourself to be more receptive to trash. That's what Arkells are; a gateway to an acceptance of sub-mediocre 'music'. Their lyrics are almost as hollow as their souls and they seem to bring nothing new to music other than a new level of garbage. Thank God this event is free; I wouldn't pay to even throw tomatoes at these amateurs. -D.P. Ontario Pavilion, 1455 Quebec St., Vancouver, BC V6A 3Z7, Canada

El Perro Del Mar :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Sat. Feb. 27

December 30, 2009

Twee pop princess El Perro Del Mar is one of those delightful little things from Sweden who, unlike many of her contemporaries, has been able to stay relevant for longer than it takes to write a blog post. -D.P. Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC V5T 3J7‎ Tickets can be found @ Ticketweb

Stars :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Sat. Feb. 20

February 11, 2010

There are few places where Stars would fit in better than in the snowy mountains during the Olympics. Something about the scene just strikes a similarity with their music. Signed to Arts & Crafts, the band is representative of Toronto's typical indie rock sound: 'emotional' and tender words mixing with dynamic music that is both sonically and acoustically pleasing. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4 Tickets can be found by calling 1-800-tickets

The Eagles :: GM Place :: May 9-10

February 09, 2010

While most people's parents approach a mid-life crisis around 40, that's how old the immortal Los Angeles rock group, The Eagles will turn next year. Not, as in, their age, as in how long they have been together. Six number one albums later, they're one of the most successful bands ever. Although they are no longer pumping out number one hits like every single day, they can still pull of a great show by taking you down memory lane with wonders like Hotel California, Desperado, Get Over It and many, many, many, many, many, many more. Tickets are available @ Ticket Tango 800 Griffiths Way Vancouver, BC

OneRepublic :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Sun. Feb. 21

February 11, 2010

I sincerely forgot all about OneRepublic. Apologize was a great single, really great. But hey, we all knew from the start that, no matter how hard they tried, they'd always be a one-hit wonder. So regardless of how good their other songs are (nothing special), you'll inevitably be spending $50 to hear a single song. And also, hasn't the time for that hit already passed? Come on, we have new one hit-wonders. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4 Tickets can be found by calling 1-800-tickets

DJ Starting From Scratch :: Boss Nightclub :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 08, 2010

While Vancouver 2010 fans will likely be flooding the gates at Gossip and Fabric for the after party dance offs and throw downs, there are certainly some scrumptious options around town for those looking away from the blockbuster events. DJ Starting From Scratch is legendary for working crowds into a frenzy and he's, consequently, become Boss Nightclub's poster boy for Vancouver 2010. This will be big air in DJ Starting From Scratch's career. Tickets are $20 @ Ticket Loot 1320 Richards Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Black Eyed Peas :: General Motors Place :: Sun. Mar. 11

December 22, 2009

First, they were interesting and actually noteworthy, then they became popular with a few great songs...and fame kicked in, thus kicking the boys of Black Eyed Peas to the backroom, and giving Fergie all the light. And look what that did to her (but more importantly, us). Now, however, things seem to be a bit more on track. BEP is a full unit, with men intact...but still, one can't help but feel that's it's just Will.i.am and Fergie, and the other two (three?) are just there for the sake of keeping the band name. It's kind of sad to watch...but kind of fun as well. -D.P. General Motors Place, 800 Griffiths Way, Vancouver, BC V6B 6G1 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

HIM :: Commodore Ballroom :: Fri. Apr. 16
